Majestic and mystic

Hiking along the so called 5-Lake route in the Pizol area, you will certainly not be alone.

We were told that on this partly cloudy, mystical, and cooler Friday only a third of people, who normally hike in the area on weekends, were taking the route. 700 people were more than enough for our liking…

There was a fun side to it, though. The hiking trail often looked like a catwalk for Transa – a Swiss outdoor specialist – as hikers walked in single file with their top quality and colourful gear. Imagine a serpentine of windbreakers and hiking shirts in pink, grass green, orange, yellow, turquoise, red, purple, blue – basically any colour you can think of – making their way up or down a mountain :0).

The landscape, lakes, and views are surely worth a visit. And if you are lucky, you may spot an ibex or two (Deutsch: Steinbock) somewhere in the rocky areas high up. Read more

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

How do you feel about snow? Does it make you dance? Does it give you the joy you so often experienced as a child? Do songs like the one in the title of this post come to your mind and stick for the day? Or is it simply a nuisance to you?

Do you get any snow at all in your corner of the world?

White landscapes are magical and snow is a natural wonder for me. So today, I feel like sharing some winter photographs – which I have taken in the Swiss Alps – with you. It wonderfully coincides with the first snow of the season in the lowlands of Switzerland for we awake to a winter wonderland this morning. Unfortunately, it does not last long as temperatures have already risen above zero and streets and pathways have immediately been “cleaned” with snowploughs.

Most people here still hope for a white Christmas in the cities and lower regions, but it is rare these days. Mountain resorts, however, are lucky as snow has fallen in huge quantities lately. The following pictures give you a little idea what to expect when visiting the Swiss Alps in winter :0).

Enjoy and come visit! Read more

A little greeting from my neighbourhood

Hello my friends

How are you at the beginning of this new month? Can you believe it is already November? Where did that year go?

Today, I simply like to share some impressions of my neighbourhood while I am recovering from surgery (phew, so happy all went well and it now lies behind me!).

I visit this place regularly and love to go there with my bike, for a stroll on my own, with my beloved hubby, and with friends. Almost every time I am here – including today’s story -, something special happens. Once when I was sitting by the little stream, for example, a dragonfly would come and sit on my bare foot to enjoy the last sunrays of the day, fly off from time to time and come back again. Mostly, she sat on my foot when she could have chosen to sit anywhere. I do have pictures of the encounter but thought you may not be that interested in seeing my foot 😜.

Autumn love from Blenio valley in Ticino

Come with me on a train ride through the longest railway tunnel in the world and end up in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. This is how easy you can move around here and find yourself not only surrounded by another language, but also by a different cultural atmosphere.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is quite a thing here in Switzerland, and maybe in the world. It was opened in 2016 and took almost 17 years to be built. It surely is a masterpiece of engineering. The tunnel is 57km long, starts in Erstfeld and ends in Bodio, and leads right through the Swiss Alps – a challenging barrier between the North and the South of Europe when it comes to mobility. As a passenger the only thing you realize is the dark view when you look out the window. Going at around 200km/h you will see the sun and the typical palm trees of the Ticino after a 20-minute ride. For those of you who would love to learn more about this spectacular tunnel, I recommend watching the 8-minute long documentary by the Swiss Radio and Television.
