Mummy mallard and her ducklings on an expedition

Once upon a time when Ladybird was on her way to work and just got off the train, she was stunned to see a mallard (Stockente in German) walking around on the other platform.

What the heck! She did not believe her eyes. What was the animal doing here in the middle of a very busy city quarter away from the lake and several meters below street level?

Ladybird stood still for a while watching the duck as people around her minded their own business. She soon realised that the duck was calling and immediately thought: “Oh my, this is mummy looking for her young ones. I’d better help her.” Read more

Flower Bouquet

The sun is shining, the sky is blue, the temperature freezing cold, though. Still the birds sing and the air smells a bit like spring.

While it may somewhat feel (if you ignore the icy mornings) and sound a little bit like spring, I reckon winter still has us in its grip. It is January after all.

Having said that, the title and the featured image of this story is flowery. What? In winter? Yes, you will see colours, flowers, and green landscape pictures today. For arid regions amazingly come into bloom whenever there is enough rain no matter what time of the year.

P.S.: As you know, the sea means a LOT to me. So now, as if needed ;-), I found evidence why the ocean is that essential:

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

How do you feel about snow? Does it make you dance? Does it give you the joy you so often experienced as a child? Do songs like the one in the title of this post come to your mind and stick for the day? Or is it simply a nuisance to you?

Do you get any snow at all in your corner of the world?

White landscapes are magical and snow is a natural wonder for me. So today, I feel like sharing some winter photographs – which I have taken in the Swiss Alps – with you. It wonderfully coincides with the first snow of the season in the lowlands of Switzerland for we awake to a winter wonderland this morning. Unfortunately, it does not last long as temperatures have already risen above zero and streets and pathways have immediately been “cleaned” with snowploughs.

Most people here still hope for a white Christmas in the cities and lower regions, but it is rare these days. Mountain resorts, however, are lucky as snow has fallen in huge quantities lately. The following pictures give you a little idea what to expect when visiting the Swiss Alps in winter :0).

Enjoy and come visit! Read more

Leaving Masoala

The reasons why people leave – and in the worst case have to flee from – their home country to live somewhere else are many.

Which ones come to your mind, when you think about it?

War? Political turmoil? Suppressive regimes? Work? Compulsory military service for life? Economic crisis? Hoping for a perspective and a job? Health issues? Business? Freedom? A different lifestyle? Family? Love?

They are all real, as far as I am concerned. But did you know that conservation sadly is another reason to leave everything you love behind? No?

A little greeting from my neighbourhood

Hello my friends

How are you at the beginning of this new month? Can you believe it is already November? Where did that year go?

Today, I simply like to share some impressions of my neighbourhood while I am recovering from surgery (phew, so happy all went well and it now lies behind me!).

I visit this place regularly and love to go there with my bike, for a stroll on my own, with my beloved hubby, and with friends. Almost every time I am here – including today’s story -, something special happens. Once when I was sitting by the little stream, for example, a dragonfly would come and sit on my bare foot to enjoy the last sunrays of the day, fly off from time to time and come back again. Mostly, she sat on my foot when she could have chosen to sit anywhere. I do have pictures of the encounter but thought you may not be that interested in seeing my foot 😜.

The flight of starlings

Do you look up in the sky from time to time? If so, what do you tend to see?

I do it several times a day and I observe birds, weather patterns, the blue sky, rain drops, lightning, insects, sometimes a plastic bag :-(, clouds, fog, sun rays, sunset colours, airplanes, the moon, Mars, Venus, stars. It is so fascinating to see what’s going on above my head, and I love that wide and open space. Read more
